Internet Marketing, “SEO” and Website Structure – Part 4

Now that we have talked about Meta Tags, Keywords, Linking, Back Links, and most important of all, Content, it’s time to discuss Website structure. This part is extremely important to your overall Search Engine Optimization techniques. I know that for those of you that may be new, all of this can be very overwhelming, but if you’ll take notes and really follow what I’m sharing with you here, the results will astound you. It all takes time, but the good news is, time is really all it costs you and you can gain page 1 rankings for whatever keywords you are attempting to get traffic for. You can save your money while traffic finds you and your site, while your competitors will be spending hundreds of dollars on Adword campaigns, wondering how you’ve naturally gained Page one rankings.

OK, back to the subject at hand, Website Structure.

Website Structure

One of the first things I want to emphasize is this, When you look at all the different websites that are out there, what do most of them have in common? Let’s take this blog for example, what is identical about this blog with millions of the other blogs out there? You guessed it, there are millions of them using WordPress, or Drupal, phpnuke, joomla, etc.. I think you get my point. They are all using the same templates for the creation of their site. Even though the content is different (but not always), they still use the same structure and templates on the backend. So the first thing I would recommend if you are selling a product or service, is to make yours unique, and either have someone build a website from scratch, or hand code it yourself. I know you’re probably thinking that’s ridiculous, but if you want your site to be loved by the search engines, then original content is the way that you can do that. Now that we have resolved to code our site from scratch you need to layout your site in a logical and search engine loving way. How do you do that? I’m glad you asked…

When you look at most websites, their default home page is something like index.html, index.php, etc.. what I suggest is you name each file or page, unique to it’s content, so for example, let’s say you are selling tires. You would want to make your home page related to your primary keyword such as, tires-plus.html (for tiresplus.com). Likewise all of your other pages within the site should be named based off of the pages keyword content and you should build a directory structure that also indicates your keywords. So from your home page, build a second, third or even fourth directory structure which uses the keywords for the underlying pages which are indicated by your navigation of the site.

Top Level Directory = tires-plus
Top Level Home Page = tires-plus.html
Second Level Directory = tires-plus-brands
Third Level Directory = Les-Shwab
Third Level Directory = Bridgestone
Third Level Directory = GoodYear
Fourth Level Directory = Les-Shwab/13-inch/tireModelNo/tireNo.html
Fourth Level Directory = Les-Shwab/14-inch/tireModelNo/tireNo.html

So from the top level it would be something like this for one particular tire, where (D)=a directory:
(D)tires-plus –> tires-plus.html –> (D)tires-plus-brands –> (D)goodYear –> (D)13-inch –> (D)tireModelNo –> tireModelNo.html

etc..

Building this kind of tree structure allows your keywords to be utilized, not only within your content, but within the overall website design. This is so powerful that it will allow your website to hit top page rankings very quickly, just from the stucture of the site as long as you use all of the other things we’ve discussed previously as well.

Once your structure has been built make sure that your are also using anchor links from all the pages you’ve created (tireModelNo.html), back to the home page. This too will be viewed by the search bots as back links to the home page, even though they did not originate from another website, the search bots will still believe it’s a back link and it will increase your page rank. Read that paragraph again until you get it. It is that important in overall SEO strategy.

I think you will be surprised in just how powerful this strategy is if you’ve never built your site around this kind of structure. Give it a try and then come back here and report how it dramatically it increased your page ranking, Naturally the way the search engines like it.

Before I go on to discuss building your online presence, I’d like to touch on what everyone’s goal should ultimately be when building an online business. Whether you have an existing brick and mortar business and just want to build an online presence for this business, you should always be thinking about how you can automate selling your products online as much as you possibly can, or figure out ways that you can sell new product lines in which you do the work once, and continue to get paid. Internet Marketing Strategies – Sizing up the Competition

Now that you’ve found your niche market products of about 5 items, you need to begin looking at the competition for these same products within the market. The easiest way to do this is… you guessed it, via the internet. If your product is the latest ‘web page designer’, then begin doing searches via google, msn and ask.com. I highly recommend that you use several different search engines to give you a good idea of what the top listings are for your products in each of them. You will be surprised that not all products are listed on all the top engines at the same time so it will give you a good mix of competing products. The first thing you should take note of when you do your searches for competing products is, are there companies out there selling your type of product already?
If so, how many? If there seems to be a plethora of products in this niche, then you should probably look at the next product in your list. If there are no competing products out there when you do your searching, this could mean that there is no market at all for your product and you should think about possibly marketing or producing something else. If there isn’t a market, it’s likely people wouldn’t spend the money on such a product and that is the reason why you are not able to find any competing products in this niche.

I know you may be asking yourself, well if there isn’t any competition, doesn’t that mean I could have a real winner? Most likely, no. This is because if there were even a slight demand for a particular product, you would already see people producing at least some of what your product idea is and it would be a rare occasion that you would have a product idea that was completely unique in which there was a high demand for, and not find at least some competition when you did your search via the web. Trust me it’s much better if you find a few competitors during your web search, because it means there is a demand for what you have to offer.

Once you’ve identified these competitors, buy their products. Determine what their strengths are, not only by thoroughly checking out their products, but also by how they are selling their products, offline and online. Take detailed notes of each of these areas and then determine if you think your product can still compete against what is already available or if there are ways that you can improve yours in the areas it’s weak and produce something better than the rest of the products out there. Once you have reached this stage you can begin looking at how you are going to position yourself as an expert online and off for this product niche.

What is Internet Marketing?

Before we move on to the subject of niche markets and sizing up your online competition, I wanted to take a few minutes to really nail down what ‘Internet Marketing’ really is. It’s important to understand this because many people get side tracked in there online business efforts because they don’t focus on what it really means to do Internet Marketing. Internet Marketing really isn’t any different than traditional Marketing with the exception that you have to use different tools to do the same job. Internet Marketing is the activity of presenting your product or services to potential customers and making them want to eagerly buy what you have to offer

So, how do you go about doing this online versus the traditional way? It is no different, other than the tools you use to get these customers to buy. Now I’m not saying that there aren’t some really cool twists online that you can use to really propel your business, because there are, but in general your marketing efforts have the same core goals and the same core ways of marketing your products. Over the next few weeks we will be discussing what these other tools are and how you can maximize your potential for getting and keeping these eagerly buying customers.

What Is Your Niche Product and Internet Marketing Strategy?

As you may have already noticed, I want to walk through some of the basics of Internet Marketing Strategy that you can use for your own product(s) or service(s) online. Here you will find the development and marketing process that I’ve used for a number of different products and websites. These internet marketing secrets are very simple to implement and as you’ll soon see, don’t require a lot of money to get started, in fact, when I began my looking for a way to build a business online, I had very little money and needed to build my business on a shoestring budget.One of the first steps in building a business online is to determine what product or service you want to build. You may already have some ideas of what you want to do, which is great but you still should evaluate other products you can market online that can be a big success.

The first thing I recommend you do is the following:

If you don’t already have a product or service, then you will want to make a list of all your interests, hobbies, ideas down on paper (make a list of at least 20 to 30 things)
Evaluate which ones you like most and put them in chronological order of the most appealing (This is important, so spend considerable time evaluating each of them)
Evaluate which ones involve a market that is a current hot trend/fad or where there is very little competition but solves a big problem.
Reorder your list to reflect items on your list which have both qualities from your two evaluations above.
Now pick 5 of these and we will call them your target market

Now keep in mind, you can use this same strategy above if you already have products that you want to sell. Just use this same principal for determining which products or areas to concentrate on first.

In order for you to have the greatest chance of success, you really need to find a market niche that appeals to you, whether it’s a hobby, or special interest. You have to find something that excites you so that when you get up in the morning you look forward to the day ahead. It should literally feel electric to you and if you can combine this with something that is a current hot trend, you will have yourself a winner and can begin to build and market your new business empire. Keep in mind that you are unique and have valuable knowledge about many subjects or niche’s, that you may have not even considered and the only way that you are going to flush these niche’s out is to begin writing them down. Take a few days to garner this list and when you think of something that you love, write it down. Think of your childhood, think of your job, think of your hobbies, think of technologies or special interests, do whatever it takes to think of possible areas of interest.

Do you have special skills that you’ve developed on the job which you can considered valuable? What about your family background? Is there something unique there that can provide a business which can add value to someone else’s life? Are there hobbies that you use to be involved in that you really enjoyed that you may be able to capitalize on? These are all things you should consider when building your list. Why is this list so important? Your greatest chance of success and seeing your ideas through to completion rely on you loving the product or subject that are going to produce and sell. I firmly believe that this is where the entrepreneurial spirit excels and where innovation shines in building a business that will reap huge profits.

So get your list going, and don’t stop evaluating where your interests are until you know in your heart that you have a winning idea. Once you have your top five ideas nailed down, you will next need to evaluate your competition in those markets and come to a conclusion where the greatest need is and fill that need!
